What is your Human Design Type?
Your Type in Human Design describes how you energetically interact with the world. It also provides you with strategies regarding how to get better at noticing opportunities around you (this is similar but not identical from your Profile in Human Design, which helps you get even more proficient at leaning into and creating opportunities, in contrast to noticing them) and is part of the equation when learning how to communicate so your words land with greater impact.
Today we’ll be focusing on the first of these three.

Your Type is generally the first thing you learn about in Human Design. Although in more advanced readings I frequently make little explicit mention of your Type, it’s always sitting in the background because it’s one of the fundamental elements in your Human Design chart.
There are five different Human Design Types, and we’re going to learn a bit about each one of them. So let’s jump in!
What if I don’t know my Human Design Type?
First of all, before we start, a note: if you don’t know what your Human Design Type is, you can easily find it out. One way you can do this is through a Google or other search for “Free Human Design chart” – there are a million such sites on the internet. A second way is to be in touch with me, and I’d be pleased to create your chart for you. In both cases you’ll need to provide your date of birth, time of birth, and country and city in which you were born.
What are the five Human Design Types?
Human Design Type 1 – Generator
The first of the five Human Design Types are Generators. A Generator’s superpower is that when they are doing what lights them up, they attract more and more of it. I mean, we all experience this – feeling energized when we’re doing what we love, for that’s part of the human condition, after all – but Generators have this big-time. A Generator’s aura is big and enveloping, and grows even larger when experiencing positive feelings and sensations.
Therefore, trusting one’s feelings and sensations is an important part of thriving as a Generator. By this I mean trusting that your inner self knows what is good for you, signaled by a feeling of expansiveness or positivity, and that you trust this feeling or sensation as being true for you. When this happens – when you aim your life in the direction of what feels good – your life expands.

To be clear – when I say “what feels good” I’m not talking about the hedonistic rush of sitting on the couch binge-watching Netflix and stuffing your face with Doritos day in and day out (though at times this can be absolutely the right thing for you to be doing), but rather eudaimonic joys – what it is that truly lights you up in your core and inner self.
Sometimes noticing eudaimonic pleasures can take time, intention, and effort, because in our society we’re frequently more strongly conditioned and rewarded for following what others deem good for us, and not what truly lights us up. So if you’re a Generator, look around, notice what’s there, and when you get that big, expansive feeling of “yes!” follow it with all your heart and soul. And if nothing lights you up, then just keep looking, perhaps in different places, and simply know that it will show up. Remain aware, intentional, listen to your body, and follow your sensations.
Human Design Type 2 – Manifestor
Were we to associate an element to Manifestors, it would definitely be fire. Human Design Manifestors are energetically designed to follow their own inner direction, unlike Generators who operate best when responding to what’s already around them.
Therefore, in contrast to Generators who gave a large, enveloping auras drawing opportunities to them (because they are designed to respond to what’s around them), Manifestors have more closed auras, protecting them from outside influences so that they can more efficiently go about following their inner drive.

Further comparing Generators and Manifestors, Generators have tremendous energy when doing those things that light them up, whereas Manifestors’ energy comes and goes in bursts. This means that if you are a Manifestor, you’ll need to have more down-time than your inspired Generator colleague.
If you want to read a bit more about Manifestors, here is a brief post on the subject.
Human Design Type 3 – Manifesting Generator
A Manifesting Generator (or “MG”) is a Generator subset. For this reason, some Human Design systems consider there to be four, not five, different Human Design Types, placing both Generators and Manifesting Generators in the same “Generator” category. I respect the merits of this this approach, sometimes following it myself, but generally prefer keeping Manifesting Generators as their own separate category of Human Design Type.
This is because although Manifesting Generators share with many core characteristics with “pure” Generators, they still have enough distinctive characteristics to in my mind warrant a categorial separation.
First, let’s look at how Manifesting Generators are similar to Generators: they both (a) have a large, enveloping aura drawing opportunities to them, (b) experience tons of endurance and energy when engaged in activities that light them up (and feel drained and tired when they are doing those things that are not ideal activities for themselves), (c) are at their most powerful when responding to opportunities that light them up.

Second, in terms of differences between the two, Manifesting Generators tend to have more speed and generally able to handle a wider variety of activities than a “pure” Generator. While perhaps appearing minor here on paper, experiencing a Manifesting Generator in person helps you understand how this is a significant distinction.
Human Design Type 4 – Reflector
Sensitivity is a big part of a Reflector’s life. Whereas Generators and Manifesting Generators can be broadly characterized by their energetic capacity, Manifestors by being initiators and trailblazers, Reflectors can be distinguished for their incredible sensitivity to their environment. This extends to all aspects of a Reflector’s environment, including both the physical environment and also the people and animals within it.
As a form of protection from the potential sensory and energetic input, Reflectors’ auras are therefore very protecting and reflective, taking in mere samples of what’s around them and reflecting the rest back to their surroundings. It is this special aura which helps Reflectors from becoming overwhelmed from all of the input around them. That being said, even though only samples are let through by their auras, this can still be too much for a Reflector if their environment is negative, heavy, or otherwise not correct for them in some other way.

It is this reflective aura which can make being around a Reflector so interesting and educational. This is because most of a person’s energy is reflected back to them when they are around a Reflector, allowing them to get a unique opportunity to see themselves more clearly. You can test this out for yourself – after a conversation with a Reflector, how are you feeling about yourself? What do you think about the Reflector as a person? Your immediate response is more of a reflection of who you are than them.
Cleansing is important
Due to their incredible sensitivity, it is very important for Reflectors to both (1) be in environments that are good for them, and to (2) frequently cleanse themselves and their physical environments energetically.
The second of these, frequent cleansing, is because it’s not realistic to always be in a positive environment. Indeed, in my opinion, it’s not even ideal. My personal perspective regarding life is that it’s only through exposing ourselves to a wide spectrum of life events, including a sampling of those that are not correct for us, that we better understand and can direct us towards environments that are most healthy and positive for us.
Some easy ways of cleansing one’s environment include decluttering and organizing, diffusing Bach Flowers and Essential Oils, letting sunshine into your space, and meditating.

Human Design Type 5 – Projector
The fifth Human Design Type are Projectors. Because of their special aura, many Projectors are naturals at being guides of one sort or the other. In contrast to Generators and Manifesting Generators’ auras which are broad and enveloping, Manifestors’ auras which are smaller and filtering in order to keep them on track, and Reflectors’ auras which take in small samples and reflect the rest, Projectors’ auras are deep and penetrating.
This deep and penetrating aura is what helps Projectors get to the core of what makes others tick, which is a big Projector superpower. A clear Projector can quite easily understand what is going on with others and where their blockages lie. Please note the word “clear” in my previous sentence. It’s important to stress that this superpower is most evident when the Projector themself is emotionally, mentally, and spiritually healthy and clear. For before you can understand others, you first need to understand yourself and have the ability to distinguish between what is yours and what belongs to the other. So for Projectors who have not yet worked on themselves – that is where they need to start.
This principle is the same for Reflectors. I mention above that Human Design Reflectors act as mirrors to those around them. This is clearest to see when the Reflector themself is clear and not mired in unresolved issues or traumas. After all, a cloudy mirror not the most useful for seeing one’s reflection.

Like Manifestors and Reflectors, Projectors do not have a consistent source of energy and so it’s important that they get sufficient rest and do not try to keep up with the same pace as Generators and Manifesting Generators. This is because although they’ll feel like they can for a period of time, over the long run is not healthy for them because their systems are not meant to go, go, go all the time. It’s the Generators and Manifesting Generators of this world (together making up about 70% of the population) who are energetically built to be the hustlers. And because Projectors absorb more energy from others and their surroundings than either Manifestors or Reflectors, of the three “non-energy” Types, the typical Projector will need more rest than anyone else.
